on the campaign. in the new poll just released in the last couple hours, people say those remarks from mr. romney made them feel more negative than positive toward mr. romney by a 22-point margin. those results match other polling that shows those comments alienated undecided voters. regardless of what you think of the substance of that it statement from mr. romney, it did turn the whole republican pundit class against him, called every candidate in a contested race to distance themselves from the presidential nominee of their party to start campaigning against mitt romney, telling voters, listen, i don't like that guy on that issue either, but vote for me any way even though i'm a republican. whether or not you think the remarks were scandalous, the polling impact of them is now showing up directly at a time when mr. romney's egregiously bad polling numbers seem to be calcifying and when most voters are now starting to vote. an incredibly negative impact for romney and his campaign at a difficult time for them. now on the eve of the first presidential debate, if they were hoping to put that behi

, let me give you a lot of people that are conservative that are giving advice to mr. romney. peg knee noonan says, tell romney to treat the president with represent and not different. newt gingrich says be on offense without being offensive. dash of humor is worth its weight in gold. go large, and explain his tax plan, and on and on and on. what's he going to do? what should he do tonight? what advice should he take? >> well, you know, mitt romney is suffering from advice. conservatives are clearly, clearly concerned about the poll numbers which have shown him behind. the race may be tightening a bit but the race is still behind in key swing state. what advice? good question. i'll be looking to see which advice he decides to follow but i think the average voter want some specifics from mitt romney. partisans, conservatives who have already made up their minds may want him to attack the president. you know, go after him, be aggressive. but i think undecided voters out there who are giving romney a second look want specifics about how he is is going to improve the economy to them, for t

the needs and problems of people like them. some of mr. romney's numbers are just shockingly bad. i mean double check. shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%. in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to get themselves to this point, whether it's mr. romney's tax returns, or the lack thereof, or getting rich by laying off factory workers or the tape where he says half the country is a bunch of lazy bums and victims who depend on the government and he doesn't care about them. whatever it is that turned their candidate into the 2012 reincarnation of thurston howell except in this reincarnation thurston is mean, whatever it is that has done that it's just killing him in the polls in every state. if the romney campaign does nothing else they must, must, must make sure that nobody anywhere near mitt romney does that rich guy can't relate to people like me thing again. here's the romney campaign last night. >> both mitt and i have summer places up in new ha

'm chris matthews in washington. let me start with mr. romney's divorce. why did he pick paul ryan for his running mate? certainly not for better or worse. mitt spends his days and nights acting as if he's out there all alone, that he never hooked up with ryan in the first place. i get it. romney doesn't want to get dragged down by his political mate's push for getting rid of medicare. he acts like ryan has no hold on him, but it's not the way it works. romney has slowly gotten the word that the voter out there thought the two had things worked out, that romney and ryan were in this thing together. well, they're not. romney is dying. he can't stand being tied to ryan, and all that budget cutting baggage of his. for his part, ryan is feeling the taint of having a running mate who is unwilling to stand with him, unwilling to be his kind of politician. a conviction politician. so trouble in paradise. mitt's dying to be single again, so is ryan. we all know that politics makes strange bedfellows but the word is out this pair, romney and ryan, are sleeping in separate rooms. i'm joined by msnbc
